I had the most amazing day recently. I started out by making German pancakes with sautéed apples and strawberries, topped with a sprinkling of confectioner's sugar and freshly whipped organic cream from Organic Valley.
After an absolutely delicious breakfast, I harvested sweet basil from a friend's garden to make Pesto. This is something that I've enjoyed making every August for several years. Instead of using pine nuts, I used toasted walnuts, sweet basil leaves that were picked, washed, and spun dry, kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper, garlic cloves and extra virgin olive oil. I buzzed everything in the food processor, tasted to correct the salt and pepper ratio and froze portions in one quart resealable bags. I had just finished enjoying the remainder of last year's abundance in a pasta dish at the finish. It was perfect timing as I was able to stock up on more of the green gold for another year.
After several hours of pesto making, we enjoyed a lunch of toasted bagels, topped with the fresh pesto, slices of just picked ripe tomatoes from the garden, smoked salmon and cream cheese. It doesn't get any better than eating from summer's abundance.
Later that same day, I had the good fortune to be invited to another friend's home to enjoy an assortment of fine caviars from Petrossian Paris including Royal Ossetra, Royal Sevruga, Alverta, USA Royal Transmontanus and Royal Baerii. With the cork popped from a 1996 bottle of Dom Perignon and a lovely bottle of Russian Vodka to enjoy with the caviar, I couldn't have asked for a better day!
The point of the story is a reminder to enjoy good food and good company wherever you may be!
